Merlin presented at IWGGMS, Bonn

From 29 June to 02 July 2026, the international greenhouse gas community will gather in Bonn, Germany for the 22nd International Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Measurements from Space (IWGGMS) – the premier forum for space-based monitoring of atmospheric greenhouse gases. Organised within the framework of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, IWGGMS brings together leading scientists, engineers, and space agencies to advance our understanding of Earth’s changing atmosphere.

The French-German methane satellite mission MERLIN (MEthane Remote sensing LIdar missioN) will be well represented at this year’s workshop. Members of the MERLIN community will contribute two scientific talks and two posters to the programme.

Presentations at the Conference

The two oral presentations focus on validation activities using the MERLIN airborne demonstrator CHARM-F:

  • Tuesday, 12:12 – Talk (3.14): Characterizing Biases of Methane Retrievals over Water and Wetlands Using Airborne Lidar Measurements – based on data from twwo CoMet campaigns using the airborne demonstrator CHARM-F.
  • Thursday, 12:24 – Talk (6.19): Airborne Lidar Measurements of Methane over Landfills and Arctic Wetlands – presenting CHARM-F results from the CoMet 2.0 Arctic campaign in Canada.

In addition, two posters will provide updates on the mission status and the pre-launch campaign programme:

  • Tuesday lunchtime – Poster (#60): The French-German Methane Remote Sensing LIDAR Mission MERLIN – which provides an overview on the current mission status and expected performance.
  • Tuesday lunchtime – Poster (#61): Overview of the Current Pre-launch and Future MERLIN Validation Activities – covering the airborne campaigns CoMet (DLR) and MAGIC (SAFIRE), with upcoming missions MAGIC AVALONCoMet 3.0 Tropics, and MAGIC Brazil.

By participating in IWGGMS, MERLIN reinforces its role within the European and global effort to monitor methane emissions from space and to support transparent, science-based climate action.

The MERLIN team looks forward to welcoming you at the talks and posters – and to engaging in discussion with colleagues, partners, and the wider greenhouse gas community about the future of space-based methane observation.
